Dozen Lettermen Return To Bolster OHS Cinder Season

Ottawa high school track coach Orlis Cox is counting on 12 returning lettermen to boost Cyclone hopes for a successful cinder season.

     Last year, Ottawa placed second in Northeast Kansas league competiton. The Cyclones finished in the runner-up spot a shade behind Lawrence.

     Letter winners returning to the Cyclone track fold are Marvin Wilson, Ernie Shaffer, Bob Bundy, Charles Hoopes, Larry Pearson, Fred Harder, Morgan Williams, Jim Tolson, Terry Paul, Don Morris, Bill Spaulding, and Jim Collins.  Jim Green is a provisional letterman.

     Events the “O” men specialize in are:  Wilson, broad jump, 220, 440, and pole vault; Shaffer, 220, quarter, and half-mile; Bundy, pole vault, sprints, and relays; Hoopes, mile; Pearson, sprints; Harder, high jump; Williams, mile and 880; Tolson, sprints, relays, and broad jump; Paul, hurdles and 440; Morris, pole vault, broad jump, and sprints; Spauldig, javelin; and Collins, discus.  Green runs the hurdles.

     OHS track candidates who have been showing up well in recent drills are Dennis Smith, high jump; Jack Stewart, hurdles; Gary Shaffer, half-mile; George Small, half-mile and mile; Meredith Williams, half-mile and mile; David Scott, sprints; Frank Johnson, sprints and quarter; Gary Hornbuckle, pole vault and hurdles; and Ervin Michael, sprints.

     Weightmen showing promise are Jim Corcoran, Larry Fischer, Jay Haggard, Dale Watts, Larry Arnold, Terry Briscoe, Fred and Larry Ferguson, and Dennis Conger.

     The 1956 schedule:
     March 24 - State indoor meet at Manhattan.
     March 29 - Intra-squad meet.
     April 3 - Garnett, here.
     April 7 - Ottawa Relays.
     April 14 - Emporia Relays.
     April 17 - Lawrence “A” here.
     April 20 - KU Relays.
     April 24 - Haskell “A”, there.
     April 30 - Baker Relays.
     May 3 - Haskell night relays.
     May 6 - League meet at Highland Park.
     May 14 - Regional meet at Swanee-Mission
     May 20-21 - State meet at Wichita East.
