Ottawa Scouts were all ready to go to the Boy Scout Third National Jamboree held on the Irvine Ranch in southern California, just south of Los Angeles, Friday, July 17 to Thursday July 23, of 1953. There were 45,401 Scouts at the Jamboree from the USA and 21 other nations.  </div> <bR> <div> The Scouts traveled to California and back on a special "troop" train that was carrying only scouts. Ottawa Scouts joined the train in Kansas City. The train made a stop on the way out at the Grand Canyon and on the way back at Salt Lake City and Denver. The train engines were still spewing out smoke at the time and all the windows (no air-conditioning) had to be closed when the train went through tunnels in the Rocky Mountains.</div> <bR> <div> Side trips were taken by the Scouts to Knott's Berry Farm, Hollywood and to Catalina Island. Special guests at the Jamboree included Vice President Richard Nixon who gave a short speech to the entire Jamboree, and Bob Hope, Roy Rogers, Danny Kaye and Debbie Reynolds who entertained the Scouts.  </div> <bR> <div> There was very little if any wood on the Irvine Ranch, and certainly not enough for 45,000 scouts so the entire Jamboree used charcoal for cooking. </div> <bR> <div> While on the train coming back from California on Monday, July 27, 1953, the Scouts were told that a cease-fire had been signed in Panmunjom, Korea to end the Korean war. The Scouts on the train erupted into cheers and ran about the train celebrating the end of the Korean war.
